Are #Hashtags Killing Your Facebook Posts?
Hashtags have always been at the core of the Twitter platform. It’s a way to group together topics, making it easy for people to jump into a conversation in a timely manner. In 2013, Facebook jumped on the bandwagon – and started supporting hashtags in a similar way. Grouping together posts, stories and people – so that “trending” topics could be seen together.
In January of 2016, BuzzSumo analyzed more than 1 billion posts from 30 million brand pages on Facebook. They analyzed tons of data, including engagement data from numerous types of posts. I found their data surrounding hashtags really interesting. Overall, Facebook posts containing hashtags, received less engagement than posts without hashtags.
Obviously, each case is different. However, before you decide to include the #hashtag, I’d ask yourself if your brand really needs it. It might just be sucking the life out of your post.
